Software Installation
Overview
- You will need the ArcView and (later in the course) the Spatial Analyst software. That is being provided on CDs
for installation on designated computers. For ease of use, create a
shortcut to the ArcView program on your desktop. The default location
for all ArcView-related files is C:/ESRI/.
- You will need the data from the Getting to Know ArcView CD. The
default location for the GTKAV software installation is C:/GTKAV/. All
the data will be automatically placed into folders beneath C:/GTKAV/Data/.
- You will need a special ArcView "extension" program for
accessing the GTKAV tutorials. The tutorials are organized collections
of data and ways of viewing them. The GTKAV extension software
provides a button (available from the ArcView project window) for accessing
these tutorials by chapter and section.
- You will need to provide a license number when first starting
ArcView. That number will be provided in class.
Installing ArcView
- Insert the "AV 3.1 + SA 1.1" disk in the CD drive.
- With Windows Explorer navigate to the Av31 folder on the CD.
- Run (double-click on) the Setup.exe program. This starts the
"Installing ArcView GIS 3.1" program.
- Press "Next", "Yes", "Next"
(to accept the "Local Install" option).
- Select the "Custom" radio button, then press "Next".
Note the destination directory. It is usually C:/ESRI/, but
the drive letter may differ on your computer.
- Uncheck the "Launch Seagate Crystal Reports 6.0 setup"
option. Check all other options.
- Press "Next" and then "Finish".
You do not need to restart your machine in order to install Spatial
Analyst, but you will need to restart your machine before launching
ArcView. (If you overlook the restart, ArcView may appear to run for
awhile, but it will not work correctly and it will make your computer
unstable.) Proceed immediately to the Spatial Analyst installation.
Installing Spatial Analyst
You must have successfully installed ArcView before doing this step.
- Insert the "AV 3.1 + SA 1.1" disk in the CD drive.
- With Windows Explorer navigate to the Sa11 folder on the CD.
- Run (double-click on) the Setup.exe program. This starts the
"Installing ArcView Spatial Analyst Version 1.1" program.
- Press "Next", "Next" (to accept the
"Local Install" option).
- Select the "Custom" radio button, then press "Next".
- Check all four boxes, then press "Next".
- Press "Next" and then "Finish".
Close down all programs and restart the machine.
Installing the GTKAV data
- Insert the GTKAV CD (found in the back of the text) in the CD drive.
- Run the setup.exe program on the CD.
- Press "Next", "Next", and "Next".
This should bring you to the "Select Components" dialog.
- Check only the "tutorial data files." Press "Next".
- A "Question" dialog will appear. Press "Yes"
when asked whether you want to continue.
- Press "Next" and "Next" to start the
installation.
- After the operation is over and the "Setup complete" dialog
appears, you may check "No, I want to start my computer
later." Then press "Finish".
NB: These instructions for installing GTKAV are based on an earlier version
of the GTKAV CD (Version 3.0). If your version behaves differently, use
these instructions as a guide.
- Download
the extension (it is a text file) and copy it into C:/ESRI/av_gis30/Arcview/EXT32.
You should name it "gtkav.avx".
- Start ArcView. From the Project window select File|Extensions.
- Find the "GTKAV exercise reader" in the list of
extensions. Check it. Also check the Make
default button. Then press OK.
The path C:/ESRI/ shown above should be the same as the
installation directory used when installing ArcView (see the detailed steps
below).
