Foreign Language Follies

The following interchange occurred in June 2001 on the popular MapInfo-L discussion list.  The original question (in Spanish) was remarkably funny, yet the grace and tact with which members responded was more remarkable still.  Since most of the list members are English speaking, and therefore may have missed this thread, a translation is offered here.

Hello everyone,

In some cases when I'm combining areas a few small women [donas] remain inside.  At the moment it's a real bother getting rid of them :(

Does there exist some program that will let me get rid of small or insignificant women from one or more areas?

First response

Estimado amigo:

Dear friend,

Perhaps I can give you a solution, but first I need to know what are "donas"  in Spanish.  In Catalan (one of the languages that is spoken in Spain)  they are ladies, but I don't think that what you need would be a solution to get rid of them.

Second response

Por supuesto pronunciado 'en norteamericano' :) I believe our friend is referring to "doughnuts" in the areas--of course [as] pronounced in "North American" :)

By the way, the New Velásquez Spanish and English Dictionary, 1999 edition, translates "dona" as "woman" or "lady."
