Year 2000

25 October Our new review of Idrisi32 GIS software is also an occasion to talk about GIS modeling and decision making, as well as software usability.  Read it at Directions Magazine.
24 October

The Data Source Report script we posted on ESRI's ArcScripts page solves an outstanding problem in ArcView: how to identify the underlying data source (file or database connection) behind every ArcView document and theme.
11 October We have added a new article on bias in environmental investigation of soils.  It explains and illustrates how standard investigation and statistical procedures tend to underestimate contamination, sometimes with enormous error.
26 September The popular Rotate Graphics extension now works in all versions of ArcView 3.x, not just 3.2.  We have also expanded its capabilities: it rotates layout objects, has a more efficient interface, and allows you to type in rotation angles.  Find out more through our software catalog.
4 August Our new References page, accessible from the home page, lists books on GIS-related subjects we have found most useful for learning or probing more deeply into the subject.  Wherever possible, there is a link from each book to pages with further information (typically, but not always, at Amazon.com).

Our interview with Rich Turner, program manager for ArcView development at ESRI, is appearing in two parts on the Directions Magazine pages beginning with Part I.

We have re-posted an article written last fall at GIS Instruction.  It summarizes answers (from 44 respondents)  to our questions about experiences with GIS courses.  You can find it and more at our Articles pages (follow the "GIS" link for more GIS articles, for example).

27 July

The Move Docs ArcView extension has proven so useful in managing our projects that we have made it available on our Free Software pages.

Our article on changing projections and datums, published last week in Directions Magazine, has been very popular.

19 July We have updated the Avenue Encryption page to reference interesting materials recently appearing elsewhere on the web.

An enhanced version of the Reproject Grids extension for ArcView 3.2 is now in beta testing.  Mail us if you are interested in helping.

10 July The Simple Random Sample extension for ArcView 3.x is the newest addition to our Free Software pages.  It enhances the capabilities of the Sample extension released last week.

The Cell IO extension for Spatial Analyst 1.x creates a development environment in which modelers can interface their code directly with Avenue and in which Avenue scripts can directly change grid data values cell by cell.

7 July The Sample extension for ArcView 3.2 is now for sale at our Catalog page.  Anyone who has to design a spatial sampling program will find that this inexpensive software saves time and increases the quality of the program and its documentation.
26 - 30 June Read our reports of the ESRI 2000 Users Conference: 10,000 attendees, 900 maps, and plenty of interest in the technology underpinning the next releases of the ArcInfo and ArcView software.
22 June Today we added a PowerPoint-derived presentation ("Fitting Data," about 30 slides) requested by a U.S. EPA workgroup concerned about assessing the risks of drinking water disinfection byproducts.  This presentation describes a rigorous approach to analyzing data distributions as mixtures of simpler ("normal") distributions.  It is already being applied to improve human health risk assessments.
12 June The article on the Star of David puzzle now features a supplement describing how GIS was used to solve the puzzle.  Techniques discussed include finding all subsets of a set of features, determining how many sides a polygon has, computing the elements of a permutation group from a set of generators, and applying group elements to spatial features.
5 June Read Adding Dimensions to GIS With VRML, featured at Directions Magazine.
5 June Our "Import Dialog" extension recovers lost dialog editors and reveals the inner workings of any dialog created with ESRI's Dialog Designer software.
26 May ESRI informs us that our Reproject Grids extension for ArcView is now featured on the ArcScripts Sample Spotlights page.
22 May If you are interested in manipulating GIS features or "world files," see the new article on two-dimensional affine transformations.  There is software available too.
11 May We have posted several hundred pages on GIS complete with technical explanations, how-to for ArcView and Spatial Analyst, and a highly selective and powerful collection of links and print references.  For the beginner and advanced student both.
4 May Search the Directions Magazine list of GIS listservers for answers to GIS-related questions (especially for ArcView, ArcInfo, or MapInfo applications).
15 April Detailed qualifications documents for Quantitative Decisions are now available through the "qualifications" link on the home page.

The hunt for new classes computer adventure has ended.  Exceptional internet cooperation among GIS users and ESRI, the developer of the ArcView GIS software, has improved the reliability and extensibility of this software.

30 March We do extensive research on the web.  The best of the engines we have found is Google.  For your (and our) convenience, we  have added easy access to Google at the bottom of all our pages.

22 March The "DeCSS" court case has clear parallels to our adventures with Avenue encryption.  See the brief update to our ArcView Encryption article.
8 March The Introduction to GIS presentation has been improved and expanded.  It includes some useful internet links, more examples of vector analyses, and several pages describing some of the challenges GISes face.
28 February The ArcView Memorized Calculations extension automatically creates scripts, remembers and re-executes your table selections and calculations, and adds impressive convenience and functionality to your desktop GIS.  For sale now and available in a functional demonstration version soon.

The free "sort and promote" script for ArcView lets you manage the order in which features draw in a theme.  Look for it on our free software pages.

23 February The hunt for new classes computer adventure has begun!  Help improve the ArcView software and earn cash prizes doing it.
20 February The Color Ramp extension is now for sale.  A highly functional demo version is available at  our free software pages.

Links to our Powerpoint presentations What is a GIS? and GIS Acquisition of GPS Data have been fixed.  E-mail us if you need a Powerpoint copy of either of these.

15 February Read the article on undocumented Avenue classes and download the list of class names.
14 February Our unique Avenue uglification utility has been updated.  This is a bug fix and a feature enhancement.  We also added instructions for using this free DOS program.

This website was created (in its current form) February 2000.
